Twisted, The Erotic photography of Alva Bernadine is the new book by the art photographer, Alva Bernadine. Whether the title refers to the book, his life or both, not even the photographer knows.

Alva Bernadine, a British photographer, has always been subversive. He likes to provoke and disturb and when not being humorous, his images are filled with a uneasiness. His style is influenced by the Surrealist movement, especially Magritte and Dali.

His work is unconventional and the images are saturated with colour and there is often an air of mystery to them. Models pose in provocative or dreamlike settings. Bodies are distorted and shadows on walls become faces. The scenarios are sophisticated but in addition suggest a story, an inconclusive narrative.

His work shows ugly beauty, sensuality and elegance, but also the dream, the fantasy, sex, or anxiety. We are quickly disturbed, amused at a photos of Alva Bernadine.

The publication of his first book, Bernadinism: How to Dominate Men and Subjugate Women in 2001, caused him to reassess his work. He looked around at the magazines he was working for and came to the conclusion the work he wanted to do did not fit in and he transitioned into art photography, eschewing professional models and all that went with them. He opted for ordinary women instead. “The models do their own make-up. Some are OK, some a terrible. If they get as much polish on their fingers as they do their nails, I don’t care. That is what I’ll use,” says Bernadine.

In his time he worked for many magazines including Vogue, GQ, Sunday Times, Telegraph and FHM. He won the Vogue Sotheby’s Cecil Beaton Award for young photographers in 1987 and Erotic Photographer of the Year in 2002 for Bernadinism: How to Dominate Men and Subjugate Women ahead of such a luminary as Nobuyoshi Araki.

The book is approx £49.99 hardback, 120 pages, 10×8 inches. Available only on Burb.
